BASEMENT LOWERING
What is it?
Previously the basement of a house was simply part of the home structure and mainly used for storage, this lead to many houses being created with exceptionally low ceilings. Over the years the basement area started transitioning into a living area. Whether for a family room, a home gym or a rentable apartment, this area of the house has become quite crucial.
Basement lowering, also known as underpinning is the process of elongating your basement towards the ground. This process might take some time to do, but it will add considerable value to your house, and it will maximize the space and utility of your home.
The process
The underpinning process involves digging down in a sequence of holes along the wall until the new prefered length is achieved. Support columns are placed during the whole underpinning process to protect the integrity of the house above. After this, the rest of the basement is dug out and the base of the new wall is strengthened. finally a new concrete wall and floor are made, and perfected to look seamless.
We recommend to do any plumbing, waterproofing and crack repairs during this time, as it will protect your new basement in the future from water damage, and any other renovation you choose to do after this.
